The 2009 summer reading program was enjoyed by many! More than 78 students registered to participate, along with many pre-school aged students who read dozens of books with their parents and earned incentives as Emerging Readers!
Congratulations to everyone who participated and a special thank you to the committed parents and PTA for making this program a huge success. Our summer librarian, Brooke Speakman, utilized the Accelerated Reader point system rather than the number of books read. The idea was for the students to better their own skills by reading at their reading level and challenge themselves over the summer. Participants earned raffle tickets to enter into drawings of their choice. An ocean themed bulletin board was created to display the names of students who reached different point benchmarks.
The readers earned prizes from CiCi’s pizza, Bob Evans, Vocelli Pizza, Eat ‘n Park, Arbys, Denny’s, Burgh’s Pizza and Wing, and Chuck-E-Cheese. Also, the Philly Pretzel Company very generously provided a supply of free soft pretzel coupons for participants. King’s provided the Frownie mascot visit and 75 free frownies for the celebration of the program’s conclusion. Barnes and Noble supplied a journal sheet to keep track of books read, and each reader that completed it received a free book from Barnes and Noble.
